This used to be a metablog, a blog about blogs. Now it is just a blog by me: Kaye D. Sweetser, Ph.D., APR. It's a blog on social media, research, teaching, Navy, life. It's all fair game for mass communicating.

If he can get out of school for a day when your class is meeting, perhaps I could bring him up to visit the class.

As to using blogs to help colleges with admissions, I did a speech in the spring / summer (they all run together) to a conference of administrators primarily from US schools (although some came from places as far away as Australia).

Using social media to connect with prospective students and their influentials (i.e., high school guidance counselors, teachers, coaches, etc.); as well as enrolled students and their families, was a central thesis of the presentation.

I am delighted to see attention being paid to this by th student who wrote to you from Ohio, among others. (Hint! Hint! As I recall, there are something like 3,000+ colleges and universities in the country. Based on the conference I attended, and the anecdotes of the roughly 150+ universities represented, almost no one is using these techniques. All of this means that students who develop insights into this could carve out successful careers in the field before they even graduate).

I trust that your students will recognize the extraordinary opportunities being presented to them by study in this nascent field.

Peter: Send your nephew to us at UGA! On another note, we talk a lot about WOMMA (esp. regarding your ethics codes) so I am happy to see you're reading out there.

Mike: A student of mine did a thesis on university use of blogs to recruit incoming students. I was surprised at how many of them used them & the content was along the lines of what you talk about -- some about homework, some lifestyle, etc. Thanks for reading & please interact on the class blog over at http://socialmediaUGA.blogspot.com

I just heard about this blog and your UGA social media course blog from Nichole Woodcock, and I'm so happy to see new media being taught and used in the classroom. I am a senior Online Journalism major at Ohio University and I've started my own blog about how universities can utilize new media or the digital space to enhance the classroom experience; therefore attracting new students and increasing morale. I think what you are doing is great, and I will be keeping up with what you and your class is saying. I hope this technique catches on across the country, in my opinion it is so important!

I would like to offer my congratulations to UGA for offering this course that will afford students the opportunity to study a singular key to the future of marketing, communications, journalism, and more.

(My congratulations also to those students savvy enough to be among the first to sign-up).

On a personal level, I am delighted to see the course as I have a nephew in high school in the Atlanta area who is considering applying to UGA.

Sincerely,

Peter C. Waldheim
Senior Strategist and interim CEO
